The Blosils are on the board of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, so they hosted a &#8220;salon&#8221; at their house Saturday evening. Stephen Beus (incidentally, the husband of one of my mission friends!), a former Bachauer gold medalist, Julliard grad, and current piano professor at BYU, gave a splendid performance.<\/p>\n<p>He played:<\/p>\n<p>Mendelssohn piano sonata in E major, opus 6\u00a0<em>Mendelssohn wrote this at age sixteen, and the piece is full of teenage angst. I forgot to listen for the teenage angst, which Abe heard and found delightful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Liszt Ballad No. 2 in b Minor\u00a0<em>This is the story of Hero and Leander. My favorite part was Hero&#8217;s death, which is reminiscent of the way Chopin&#8217;s Ballad No. 1 ends. I also enjoyed the meeting of Hero and Leander in heaven, where the theme switches to a sublime B major. B major was Liszt&#8217;s &#8220;heaven&#8221;&#8211;not just in this piece, but in his others too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bach-Liszt Organ Fantasy and Fugue in g Minor\u00a0<em>Liszt got carried away in some of his transcriptions. In this one, he literally transposed every single note of Bach&#8217;s organ piece (including pedal parts!!) and put it on the piano.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14685\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14685\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14685\" src=\"http:\/\/abeandlily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_7772-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abeandlily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_7772-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abeandlily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_7772-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/abeandlily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_7772-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There were probably at least fifty people in the Blosil&#8217;s home, so some had to squeeze right next to the piano to fit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beus at the Blosil\u2019s\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NRUoy-SNOvo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Before this highlight, we spent a lot of Saturday feeling tired. I baked another chocolate prune cake. I made one earlier this week and it soared to the top of our &#8220;family favorites&#8221; list.\u00a0 I got it from the cookbook, &#8220;Have Your Cake and Eat It Too,&#8221; a book I bought because of the title. None of the desserts actually captured my imagination until I went on my diet, and now I am completely enthralled with this book.
